It was 3 p.m. when the landlord, who is an Indonesian
student, knocks my room and invites me to have some meal.
“Ayo makan dulu. Dari tadi pagi belum makan kan?”
“Hehe. Makasih mbak.”
“Gak usah malu. Aku tadi dah masak banyak. Siapa yang
mau makan nanti.”
I’ve just smiled at her showing that I’ll follow her
to the dining room.
There are three new students living in this house and
she invites all of us to have lunch together. How kind is she, thanks mbak Wina =)
While we are eating, she tells many things related to
her study, her job, her daily activity, and invites us to go groceries tomorrow
morning. Since there is no shops around our neighborhood, we have to go to the
shopping center which is located near the station and buy some groceries for a
week (beli sayur dan buah yang banyak untuk persediaan seminggu).
She also explains how is living in Melbourne. Melbourne
has four seasons and now is summer. In summer, the day becomes longer than the
night. Many people love summer because they can go out (meskipun udaranya
puanas) and enjoy the day in the beach to have sun bathing. There are more time
for kids to play outdoors and it is a great time to go camping, fishing,
gardening, and other activities. That is why they like summer.
As a Muslim, the thing that really surprised me in
summer is the praying time. Subuh is supposed to be at 4 which is similar to
Indonesia, Dzuhur is around 1.30, Ashar is about 5.20 (jam segini sudah Maghrib
di Malang), Maghrib is almost 9 (OMG, jam 9 disini masih terang benderang
bahkan matahari belum sepenuhnya terbenam. Padahal mata dah pengen terpejam aja nih =(), and Isya’
is around 10.30 (Seminggu pertama masih roaming. Kadang isya’nya hilang gegara
terlelap duluan. Jadi harus Isya’an dulu baru deh tidur).
Anyway, I am not alone. Some of my Indonesian friends
feel the same way. It's time to adjust the new 'world', mate!
